Kitchen makeover for under $50.00!

My husband and I bought this table right before we were married 12 years ago.  We found it in an old antique store in our hometown, Bristol VA.  Come to think of it he must have really been courting me because now you couldn’t get him in an antique store even if they were giving away free beer.
12 years, two kids and 12,960 meals later it has shown just a little wear.
This is my favorite.  To this day no one has confessed to the monkey drawing.
Even though it was almost January, North Carolina was going to get about 3 days of sunny 60 degree weather.  Perfect time to do the table and chairs.  Never mind the kids being out of school, or our 36 guests, or the Christmas tree that needed to come down.  I had been wanting to paint the table and this was my chance.

I only sanded the areas that had dried oatmeal and a couple other food related caked on spots.  I painted on two coats of Old White Chalk Paint, allowing each coat to dry for about 2 hours.  Also very important….I took the time to lightly sand in between each coat.  I usually do not take the time to do this but it gives it a MUCH more even, professional look.

I wanted a distressed look so I sanded with medium grit sandpaper all over the legs and edges of the table.  Then I mixed 3 parts glaze to one part brown paint.  I brushed on the glaze, let it sit for a minute and then wiped off with a damp rag.

Ever since they showed the table with mismatched colored chairs on the show Friends, I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind.  I looked around my house and realized I had three different color chairs in different rooms.  I only needed a green one so I painted one of the chairs from the set and replaced the fabric with part of a quilt top.

Blue chair from an antique store, just changed out the fabric on the seat.  $6.00

Pink chair from Habitat Restore just changed out fabric on seat.  $15.00

Yellow Chair from same antique store as blue chair.  $5.00

For under $50.00, I get to keep the table that means the world to me but have it looking a little more decent too!

    Hee hee Lynnie
I think I only antique them so they don't have to look perfect. You can't see all the places I messed up when it is distressed and glazed over! It's just much more fun to be sloppy when you can call it distressed!!

Honestly I think my husband did the monkey with a sharpie on a piece of paper and it bled though to the table. BUT HE BLAMED IT ON THE KIDSSSSSSSSSSSS. Neither one can draw like that so I know it was him!!! I do kinda miss it.

LOVE IT! I wrote a post about wanting to paint our kitchen table, oh, um, two years ago and it STILL has a table cloth on it. :) It's a HUGE table, so it'a bit more daunting since I just don't know how it will look white in such a large size. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE yours.

And P.S. You WILL be getting an official email from me about Becoming. 😉 Give it another month or so. xoxox

I just stumbled upon your blog and I must say I fell in love!! Your style is so in line with what I *wish* my house looked like (always a work in progress, but you've given me some new inspiration) I paint A LOT of wood, but my husband won't let me touch our table or buffet/hutch :-(
Oh how I wish I lived closer so I could visit your store, unfortunately WA state is more than a quick weekend trip.

Can I suggest painting it when he is gone!?!?!? My husband was the same way. He just didn't understand painting beautiful brown wood. So i just did it when he wouldn't have a chance to have a say. Now he loves it. I think.
