My $25.00 guest bedroom makeover!

My guest bedroom has gone through a lot of changes over the years.

guest bedroom makeover

It has served as a dumping ground for whatever I’m not using in the rest of the house or things that are waiting for the next yard sale.guest bedroom yard sale (13)The guest bedroom has also been my storage unit for Button Bird Design goodies waiting to be sold.

guest bedroom Oh yeah and occasionally I will clear a path for when we actually have guests!

guest bedroom makeoverThis was the current scene Friday.  I made a lot of bad choices 8 years ago.  A lot of bad paint choices and this green paint is the top of my bad choices list.  The green walls and the giant red bookcase have mocked me ever since.  See that bedspread!?  I don’t even like it!  I just bought it because it would go with the green and the red.  It’s like Christmas up in my guest room and every time I walk in I feel like I should start singing Joy to the World.

laddersRecently my darling daughter said she no longer wanted these awesome ladders that I found at a yard sale for $5.00 in her room!!!  What was wrong with that child??  The ladder thing, she doesn’t like pizza, and she wants to be a cheerleader when she grows up.  Clearly she was switched at birth.  No offense to cheerleaders. I tried out once and didn’t make it.  I’m still bitter.  I’m bitter about cheerleading and people hanging out at the Goodwill all day snatching up all the furniture.  Wow time to make an appointment with my therapist.  Not want these ladders????  She said they were to roughed up for her taste.  She’s 10 and all of the sudden has taste.

Well fine by me.  I’ve always wanted a library in my house!  A beautiful calm soothing neutral room totally devoted to books and comfy chairs and built ins so high you have to use a ladder to get to the top!  Ahhhhhh I love books.  My sweet little Lilly deciding to get rid of her ladders inspired me to create my own library in my guest room.  The women at The Redesign Company pretty much inspired me too!  More on that later this week!  I’m all about suspense these days!!

The budget was going to be small, like zero dollars small.  That’s where the fun and challenge comes in.  I did buy paint, if I was going to do anything with this room I had to get rid of the green!  I can not believe it took me 8 years to paint this room.

I cleared out the whole room except for the huge RED bookcase.  I swear someone should delete the color obsession chip from my brain when buying wall paint and furniture.  I remember buying that bookcase.  I went in wanting white and came out with bright red.  Yeah white and bright red, I see the similarity.

Reclaimed my ladders!

With the new grey paint and the PLAIN, WHITE, no pattern, no color window treatments, I felt like I could breathe in this room.  I loved it.  Ok trying so so so hard not to add to much color.  Do not add too much color.  I repeat do not add too much color…….

Dang it.  That bookcase again.  I have looked all over my house for another place to put that thing but I just love it with all my books.  Did I mention I love books.  Like little tiny gifts just waiting to be opened.  Dork.guest bedroom makeover

My mamaw has been reading my blog.  She sent me a bunch of old books and lots and lots more Mason jars!!!

My new little library is complete!  Looks more like a Mason jar library then a book library!!!  Everything in this room came from other parts of the house.  I will slowly add books and remove the mason jars as my book collection grows.  Now I have a place that the kids and I can go and curl up with a book.  Ok that last sentence is totally make believe but now I have a place where I will TRY to make my kids go and curl up with me and a good book!guest bedroom makeover

Stole the globe from my son’s room and the pillows, chair, and blanket came from our bedroom.guest bedroom makeover

guest bedroom makeoverThe music stand also came out of Lilly’s room and now I’m using it to hold some of my mamaw’s old hymn books!  You just never know when I might throw down my book and break out in dance and song.  Jack of all trades people.

It looks great, of course! Have you read Her Mother’s Hope and Her Daughter’s Dream by Francine Rivers? If not, those are your next reads, amazing, especially if Redeeming Love is one of your favs!

      Hey Jennifer!
I actually just got those from!!! Ok I think they will be the next reads!!

      • Jennifer July 1, 2013 at 1:04 pm #

Awesome! I’m sure you will love them! Enjoy!

I love it! So welcoming! If you get bored, you could drop some small, fake animals in your Mason jars. Then it would look like a science library! And you could see how long it takes your kids to notice. Do I sound bored? Maybe I’ll go work on a project. I need to paint my Hoosier. (That sounds totally weird and perverted!) Wish I could get you to do it. You make it all seem so easy. And Redeeming Love is my fave book ever. I cry through most of it.

What the what is a hoosier!?!?!?!?! That totally sounds weird and perverted!

It looks great!!! What color gray did you use? I love how the ladders flank the window :)

Benjamin Moore’s Ninbus!!! I found it on Pinterest! Hope you are having a wonderful time in Boston!!! Can’t wait to get together when you get back!!!

I love reading anything by Katie Fforde……….
    Love your new room.

    • angela July 1, 2013 at 8:34 pm #

I LOVE the ladders! And sorry about your daughter…one day she’ll come back to you and see the err of her ways. 😉 Ok, if you love Francine Rivers and haven’t read her Mark of the Lion series, you must RUN to get them. Her best series, in my opinion, and the best series I have ever read. My husband actually complained that he never saw me or talked to me while I was reading those. He clearly didn’t understand. :) Also, I just finished To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time. I can’t believe it took me this long to read it. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

    • angela July 1, 2013 at 8:34 pm #

Oh I loveeee a good series!! I haven’t heard of this one!! Thank you!! I also just read To kill a Mockingbird about a year ago for the first time! Awesome book!
Hope you are having an great summer!!

Angela, can I ask — are the white drapes the linen Ikea ones??

    • angela July 1, 2013 at 8:32 pm #

Yes indeed they are!!! Don’t you just love their drapes! I always use to make mine but you can’t buy three yards of fabric for what they cost!!

      • Brooke July 1, 2013 at 8:42 pm #

That is extremely helpful! I am not an experienced sewer and I thought maybe it was just me — I haven’t been able to find a good bargain on white linen for curtains, so I’ve been toying with the idea of buying these. They look lovely in your home and I think I’ll just make life easy on myself this time. :)

        • angela July 2, 2013 at 11:17 am #

I love to sew but it just makes more sense to buy Ikea curtains. They look great and the price is amazing! I love the size Ikea curtains come in too. Super long. If they are too long I just cut off the bottom and let them puddle. So much better then sewing your own and I love to sew!!!

Redeeming Love is an all time favorite for me and my 3 young adult daughters too!!

    • angela July 2, 2013 at 11:18 am #

Such a great book! Someone put that book in my hands when I needed it most. I loved every second of it.

  8. Gwen July 2, 2013 at 3:53 am #

Oh how awesome and grown up you are becoming!!! By the time I got to Joy to the World I felt joy filled. God is good. I have a hubby waiting to play Chinese Checkers so I must write my page turners down. I have a TBI. Reading for a once gifted person is now a challenge. To keep my interest. But I could hardly wait for each book to come out: author Gilbert Morris–Lady Trent Mystery Series
    1. The Mermaid in the Basement
    2. A Conspiracy of Ravens
    3. Sonnet to a Dead Contessa
    Yes page turners. Christian author.
Also liked Mary Connealy’s Sophie’s Daughters series. Doctor in Petticoats. Sharpshooter in Petticoats. Wrangler in Petticoats.
Plus my daughter just got me To Whisper Her Name by Tamera Alexander
Ps. I did read good novels w/my kids til age 13 then they’d read and I’d read but its fun!!!

    • angela July 2, 2013 at 11:19 am #

      Hi Gwen
Thank you for these suggestions! I will check them out. Have fun playing Chinese Checkers!!!

The Kitchen House….did NOT want it to end! I then read The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. I believe you would enjoy that. Next, while still pinning for The Kitchen House, I read James Patterson’s Alex Cross’s Trial. It is not your typical Patterson book. Be the first to smile!

    • angela July 3, 2013 at 3:37 am #

I cried like a baby at the end of Kitchen House. I mean real big fat tears, where I had to excuse myself!! That book was just awesome. Thanks for the suggestions!!

  10. Jessica July 2, 2013 at 11:03 pm #

Oh, your redone guest bedroom looks amazing! I am definitely inspired to redo both my bedroom and office area. :)

    • angela July 3, 2013 at 3:36 am #

THanks Jessica! Send before and afters!!!

  11. Susan July 2, 2013 at 11:12 pm #

Love the room makeover, especially the ladders. :) I loved Let’s pretend this never happened. Try these books:
    1. Dad is Fat
    2. Bossypants
    3. Anything by Jeanette Walls – not comedy, but family stories about her grandparents, and growing up.

    • angela July 3, 2013 at 3:35 am #

      Hi Susan
We must be shopping at the same book store because we are reading all the same books!!! I loved Bossypants and I have read 2 books by Walls! Love her. What is Dad is Fat!?!?!?!

      • Susan July 3, 2013 at 1:18 pm #

Dad is Fat is the new book by comedian Jim Gaffigan. I think only parents can really appreciate it, because he talks about his kids through the entire book. It’s written in short chapters, blog style.

I work at a library, so I have access to great books!

I’ve been following your blog ever since I heard you speak at Becoming last summer. I am taking your class this time and can’t wait!

  12. Laurie July 3, 2013 at 12:10 am #

The room makeover looks great! I’m going to look up “Let’s Pretend this never happened” on the kindle. Funny books are good! My daughter is 11 and she has taken to telling me I’m looking at old lady shoes at RackRoom. And clothes… oh boy!

    • angela July 3, 2013 at 3:32 am #

      Thanks Laurie!
Warning on Let’s Pretend this Never Happened…lots of bad language!!! Just in case;) Totally cracking me up though! I love the way she writes, totally what is going on in my head most of the time!!!
      lots of love

Flabbergasted by Ray Blackston made me laugh out loud. It’s a great Summer read.

    • angela July 3, 2013 at 3:30 am #

Oh thanks! Laughing is my favorite! Didn’t Buddy the elf say that!?!?!
