Put your Big Girl Panties on!

This is my friend Tonya.  Everyone should have a friend like Tonya.  She was one of the first people I met when I was the new girl in tenth grade.  She was my college roommate and a bridesmaid in my wedding. By the grace of God our families always seem to end up in the same town though many moves.  22 years after that first day in English class, she lives 5 miles away!

She is one of those friends that can make you laugh till you pee in your pants, one of those friends that will tell you the truth regardless of what you want to hear, she is one of those friends who is up for ANYTHING, ANYTIME.  In college while I was on my way to the 8th keg party of the week, Tonya was busy visiting art exhibits, seeing plays, attending debates, writing for the newspaper, and experiencing anything cultural that the college had to offer.  Boy she was ahead of her time and I wish I had tagged along with her more.

Luckily I have her now to tag along with.  Tonya has had several big girl jobs in the big Charlotte City in some of the big Charlotte buildings.  I don’t get to see her as much as I would like due to her career/jobby jobs and family, but last week my girl had some time off and we spent 3 WHOLE DAYS TOGETHER!  We called it our inspiration week.

Because I am a complete and totally chicken, I never go into Charlotte.  All those cars, and lanes, and more cars make me break out in a sweat.  I always want to go into the city and experience all that the Queen city has to offer, but most of the time I end up hitting areas around my home that I am comfortable with.  Tonya was about to change all that.

She called and said, “Pack your Lunch, we are going to hit all the design stores, boutiques, and galleries we can fit into one day…….and you have to drive.”  Whattttttttttttttt?????  Inspiration Day she called it! She was going to push me out of my little comfortable box if I liked it or not.

We went into some of the swankiest, fanciest, snobbiest places I think I have ever been in.  $2,000 chairs, $800.00 dresses, things I was scared to touch because if I broke something, I would have to sell my house in order to pay for it.  For a thrift shop girl this was a big deal.  I mostly felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (except for the prostitute part) when she goes into that clothing store.  I felt sure they could tell I didn’t belong in their store and knew that my coat was from Salvation Army.  But not Tonya, she walked right in those elegant, extravagant stores with her head held high like she owned the place.  Then she would ask the sales people to tell us about the lastest trends and what they thought was making a comeback.  I mostly stood by my friend with a big smile on my face going hee hee, hee hee.

It was a wonderful day full of inspiration and lots of new and different experiences.  My brain got the boost that it needed.  Plus an added bonus I didn’t hit not even one car, parked or moving.  Here is some of my favorite things from our inspiration day!

I am so mad I did not buy this shirt.  I am still giggling about it.

Where do you find your inspiration?

we have alot of those “fancy design and clothing” stores here in Charleston too. i'm always afraid to walk into the clothing ones. mostly because they only carry stick doll size clothing and i am NOT stick doll size :)

looks like a ton of fun! great friendships are key to sane minds.

Yes i use to live in Charleston and they do have a ton of stores i was a little intimidated to go into. Tonya has taught me to just march on in there and check it out. Stick doll sizes stink.

Man, I totally started taking cards from all the places we went and somehow lost them all. My favorites were Green With Envy and Slate Interiors. The owner of Slate was sooooooooooooo nice and talked to us forever. Check it out if you haven't been there!

You have no idea how proud I am of myself. Now I feel like I could probably do it by myself. There are just so many amazing places I was missing out because of yucky fear. Fear NO MORE!!!!!

How lucky are you that your bestie from college still lives near you! I wish my girls and I could hang out more often, but we try to see each other at least once a year!

What a fun day! I would get so much inspiration from so many beautiful places too. I get tons of inspiration from, wait for it. Waiting in the line at the Grocery Store!! I peruse those gorgeous magazines, sometimes even snap a pic with my phone. I also love to wander through an “Anthropology” store, but then who doesn't feel inspired to create when you walk through one of those!
